"At the dawn of the millennium, the nation collapsed. At 15% unemployment, 10 million were out of work. 800,000 students boycotted the schools. The adults lost confidence and, fearing the youth, eventually passed the Millennium Educational Reform Act, aka the BR Act..."

"So today's lesson is, you kill each other off till there's only one left. Nothing's against the rules."

Ενδιαφέροντα trivia από το Imdb:

  • The film, as the book before it did, symbolises the transition from education to the cut-throat employment market in Japan. It is also a nightmare vision of a world dominated by adults with nothing but contempt for children, and the horrors, tragedies and emotions of childhood.

  • Many people in Japanese Parliament tried to get the novel banned to no avail. When the film was released, they attempted to ban the film. Both times, this action only led to more success for both the novel and the film.

  • One of the top-10 highest-grossing films in Japan.

  • Contrary to popular belief, this film was not banned in the United States. A combination of reasons helped to stop the film's release. It failed to find the necessary distributor, failed to meet Toei's conditions for sale and also the MPAA general standards. The nature of the film - not the violent aspect, but the fact that the main characters are so young - also created much controversy and slowed down any possibility of a US release.

  • The magazine containing bomb-making instructions that is used by Shinji Mimura and his gang is titled "Hara Hara Tokei" ("The Ticking Clock"). This magazine is a real bomb-making magazine published by an anti-Japanese-Government activist group called Higashi Ajia Hannichi Buso Sensen (East Asia Anti-Japanese Armed Front) from the 1970s.

  • The painting of all the students was created by Beat Takeshi Kitano.

  • None of the cast had any stunt doubles, not even the lead, Tatsuya Fujiwara.
