But what's the deal in this scene with nurse Aggeliki Papoulia, a person on a hospital bed and a tennis racket+ball? ;-D

Some of the reviews after the first (industry) screening last night in Venice revealed quite a lot details regarding Lanthimos' film plot. If you check the one on Screen Daily in particular you will fully understand what's going on. But enter at own risk, there are quite a few spoilers!

AUEB Film Club is proud to present the "Alps" press notes for the Venice film festival, stuffed with all kinds of bizarre artwork, the "15 Rules of the Alps" and the "We are the Alps" poem [song?]!

Let's take a closer look!

ARTWORK

A compilation of stills from Lanthimos' film combined in all sorts of ways both with one another and with other scetches, drawings of flowers, a photo of the [actual!] Alps, a "scull portrait"... And all of this in quite saturated black & white!
I wouldn't call it a family photo album. It looks to me like a strange home made scrap-book, something like the "SEVEN's John Doe raised by DOGTOOTH's family" scrap-book! ;-DDD

"15 RULES OF THE ALPS"

Remember the eight "Rules of the Fight Club"?
Well, in "Alps" we have fifteen of them! :-D

They lay out the requirements a person must meet to become a member of the Alps (age, physical condition, social skills etc) and the guidelines for behaving within the group, either practical (must take up an Alps mountain nickname, cannot change physical appearance without permission, should be clean, punctual etc) or ethical (respect each other, support group interests, not get emotionally involved with clients).

Of course there is a "you do not talk about" rule:
7. Can never talk about Alps activities with non-Alps members.
(occupying only one spot in Alps rules! ;-)

But there is also a fundamental difference with "Fight Club":
15. Must never attack one another...

And that brings us to the rule which for me stands out of the rest for "Alps" members:
14. Must honour the title of their membership, and be ready to kill or die for it [!!]

"WE ARE THE ALPS"
...
No need for sadness
No need for pain
We'll be there, there, there
No more unhappiness
Grieve no more
...
We are the Alps
Oh yeah, we are the Alps

Sound like a jingle you would hear in a cheesy TV commercial [Lanthimos has had a long and very successful career in directing TV ads]. Maybe we will hear it in a scene like the brother-playing-guitar-and-sisters-dancing scene in "Dogtooth"? Of ourse it can be creepy, but to me it is leaning more to "funny" or "grotesque". It sure gives something of a lighter tone to the darkness of the film artwork.


So there you have it!
We are less than two weeks away from the beginning of the Venice film festival. Hopefully we'll have an "Alps" poster and a teaser trailer till then. There is premise for some great films in Bienale, having many outstanding directors competing for the Golden Lion. And Lanthimos with "Alps" sure is one of them! I can't wait! :-)

"Όταν το τέλος είναι κοντά, οι Άλπεις είναι εδώ."

Μόλις πέτυχα αυτές τις δύο νέες φωτογραφίες [μέσω του filmpressplus.com] από τις "Άλπεις" του Γιώργου Λάνθιμου, 25 μέρες πριν το κόκκινο χαλί της Βενετίας [31/8-10/9] όπου με πρόεδρο της επιτροπής τον Aronofsky θα έχει να συναγωνισθεί στο διαγωνιστικό τις νέες ταινίες των: Roman Polanski, Tomas Alfredson, Andrea Arnold, David Cronenberg, Abel Ferrara, George Clooney, Marjane Satrapi - Vincent Paronnaud, Todd Solondz, Steve McQueen, Aleksander Sokurov, William Friedkin, Philippe Garrel και πολλών άλλων! [για ολόκληρη τη λίστα τσέκαρε /film].
This is what I call competition! Can't wait! ;-)

Και η πρώτη φωτογραφία που είχαμε δει πριν μερικές μέρες [via Flix]

Η σύνοψη της ταινίας:

"Μια νοσοκόμα [Αγγελική Παπούλια], ένας τραυματιοφορέας [Άρης Σερβετάλης], μια αθλήτρια ρυθμικής γυμναστικής [Ariane Labed] και ο προπονητής της [Τζόνι Βεκρής] έχουν δημιουργήσει μια ομάδα. Αντικαθιστούν νεκρούς ανθρώπους. Προσλαμβάνονται από τους φίλους και τους συγγενείς των νεκρών. Η ομάδα ονομάζεται Άλπεις και ο αρχηγός της, ο τραυματιοφορέας, ονομάζεται Mont Blanc. Τα μέλη της ομάδας είναι υποχρεωμένα να λειτουργούν σύφωνα με κάποιους κανόνες που έχει ορίσει ο αρχηγός. Η νοσοκόμα δεν υπακούει αυτούς τους κανόνες."


Στις ελληνικές αίθουσες θα κάνει... παρέλαση [27 Οκτωβρίου! :-D] σε διανομή Feelgood.
